BEFORE joining KLRC your World Ranking was around 70 and now you are in the top 20 and a real chance for the Beijing Olympics. Was this always a goal for you?

Yeah, before I joined KLRC  my  ranking  wasreally  low  and  I  was playing really really badly, so  I  never  thought  it would be possible – but now I am ranked 18 and have  had  some  wins and my results are a lot more consistent so now it’s a lot more real and definitely a goal.

Do you think you will qualify?

YES I have to believe I have a chance!!!

What will you have to do to make sure you claim the spot as there is 5 Malaysian Players all currently ranked between 16 and 21 that will have a chance to go to Beijing?

I just have to play as many  tournaments  asI can before the end of the qualifying period and make  sure  I  do  better in   those   tournaments than  the  others  close  to  me  especially  Choong  Hann  and Hafiz. Between now and the end of April I might play up to 8 tournaments and hope to do well.

So now you have been with KLRC for approximately 18 months are you satisfied you made the right move?

I was one of many singles players in BAM & was taking the back seat. As such, my game was deteriorating and I had no longer had any desire to succeed. Then I saw light!. Since coming here I have coaches helping me and support focusing on making me a better player. I have become more focused and can now see the improvements. Because of this I am a lot more relaxed and happy in training.

You had a pretty good 2007 with winning the US Open, Canadian Open, Bittberger Runner Up, Dutch and NZ Open semi finals have these been the highlights

Yes I had a good year happy with to get some results, It was much better than 2006

Even though you have left BAM you still get the support from the Malaysian badminton fans, the World Championships was a great example of this. After your huge game with Bao , you had a standing ovation for your performance.

Yeah its good, I am still playing for Malaysia and so it hasn’t made any difference to the supporters.

Do you like a lot of crowd support?

Oh yes I like it a lot when I’m playing

Cheah Soon Kit will soon be join KLRC as head coach, what do you think he will bring to your game?

He is a very good coach and I think he will help me a lot with my mental side of the game and also with my confidence. He is a legend here in Malaysia and definitely has a lot to offer me. I get on well with him so it will be good to talk to him about my training. I’m looking forward to working with him.

What’s your goal for your World Ranking over the next 12 months?

Top 10!!!

Olympics aside, do you have anyother goals for your badminton?

I would like to play Thomas Cupagain for Malaysia. I have alreadyplayed in the Thomas Cup teamin 2002 and 2004 but would like the opportunity to be in the team again

How long do you think you will continue to play?

2 years maybe - It depends on a few things, if my body will allow me too as its hard to keep up the singles training for a long time, also if my results are no good then I will decide.

Some would say life as a professional badminton player is a good life, always travelling around the world playing something you love. Do you enjoy it?

Oh Yes, but I find the travelling very hard, especially when you do many tournaments in a row, I get really tired and then also my results aren’t so good. Once or twice a month is ok but more than that and I start to get tired.

Where is one of your favourite places to travel to?

Hmmm  - I think Switzerland, its quiet and peaceful also beautiful, I like it there

Why did you choose badminton as a sport?

When I was very young my father used to play and would take me along for fun, I guess I kept on with badminton because I was good at it

Do you have any brothers and sisters?

Yes I have a brother who plays badminton for the state and also 2 sisters, I am the oldest though

When you finally do finish or retire as a player have you thought about what you then might do?

No, I’m just concentrating on playing at the moment, but I think I would like to maybe coach at KLRC and give something back. I would like to stay in badminton.

Do you have any other interests or play other sports in your spare time?

Well I don’t really have any time for other sports but I do like to play computer games and also like to watch K1 fighting on the TV.
